Stumbling Across Turtles in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
There I was, living it up on ‘The Big Island’ of Hawaii, wandering along the beach, rock-hopping to look for sea-life, when suddenly I stopped dead in my tracks. The ‘rock’ I was about to step on moved! It was a large turtle!!! I got such a shock and jumped back to give it space. Then I noticed a second one only meters away.
What magic is this?
Turns out what I stumbled across was “Turtle Beach”, just south of Kailua-Kona town in Hawaii’s big island. It’s an unmarked beach, but well known to the locals, only accessible by walking around the coastline or by living in one of the three houses that border it (no access from the road). The turtles come in here to bask in the sun and are known to swim up to anyone who is going for a dip.
I watched on as one of them made for the water, and swam around in the shallows on it’s side, almost waving at me with it’s little flipper arm out of the water. It was so special to witness this beautiful creature in this natural setting.
